Reflection of AED 200

1. What were you expectations for this course and where they met?
I didnt have very high expectations for this course since I only took this course because I didnt any art credit to graduate, but this was a very interesting course and I really enjoyed in when I first started it look as if there was going to be a lot of work but it really evened out throughout the semester and the flexibility was a huge help for me since I am a full time student and I also work full time so I can get very busy and overwhelmed easily with everything I have going in.
2. Now that you've been through this course, What is art? How would you define it now compared to your initial posting?
I believe when I first started this course I put that Art was something that you look at and interrupt or something along those lines, which I still feel the same way but I feel that all the art I looked at this semester definitely made me enjoy certain types of art and have more of an open mind to different pieces of art.
3. Who was your favorite artist in your original posting and who is your favorite visual artist now? If there is a difference, why do you think so? If you have the same favorite artist, why do you think so?
I didnt put a favorite artists because like I had stated when I first started the course I am not into art that much, I feel as if I dont have a favorite. I am very much into oil paintings that is my favorite type of art to look at along with sketches since they are so free and can be more difficult to interrupt
4. Now that you've completed this course, how do you feel about taking an online course? Is your answer the same as it was in your first posting? How is it the same or different?
My answer is the same, I love online classes I took them a lot when I was in community college...I also wishes to take more since they are so convenient for me since I do not have the luxury of not working while in school, I wish but I can't do that.So online classes are always so much easier and I think it gives an individual more self discipline on learning things on there own without a teacher always by there side.

Project 5

1. Use the vocabulary you have learned in class to describe this artwork or performance in detail.
This piece of art, there are lots of shapes which is a huge element when creating a piece of art. It has a neutral color pattern, black and white which makes you focus more on the shapes and figures in the piece of art.
2. What processes were used to create this work? What social influences might the artist be responding to and why?
From the research I did on this oil painting, this was a piece showing the large mural shows the suffering of people, animals, and buildings wrenched by violence and chaos, this was in response to the bombing in Guernica, Spain and also helped during the Spanish civil war.
3. What is the relationship of this work to the time and society in which it was created? Describe the symbols used to express this relationship.
I think that in this piece of art, the fact that there are people and animals along with buildings just scattered all over the the place really gives you a feel of chaos in this time period.
4. Identify elements in the work that evoke a persuasive or emotional response. Be specific about what those responses are and why.
The elements of shape are really showing the more emotion with the different shapes of the figures in this piece, the shapes of the people and the animals aren't shaped like a normal animal or person they have a different more distressed look to them.
5. Evaluate what you perceive to be the strengths and weaknesses of the work.  Apply discipline specific vocabulary and concepts when describing your point of view.
This is a very different piece of work since everything is so scattered throughout the piece of work. I could see a weakness of this piece being that it is too busy for some people or they may think something else of this piece of art. Strengths of this piece of art is that it has a strong message for the time period and I think that is what makes the piece so unique and amazing.

project 4 reflection

For this project, I had started with a different theme in mind I really enjoyed the videos I had watched for my blog review about lowbrow they seemed very interested to me but they were a bit harder to find for me so I picked a specific artist that I found interesting and used his works of art that were all a bit similar or used the same materials to create them. Once I was able to decide on the pieces I wanted to use it was easier to create the slideshow. I really enjoy watercolors I think they have a bit more meaning and are so much more interesting to look at for me.

13&14 Video Review

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

The Lowdown on Lowbrow: West Coast Pop Art:  Art historians call it Pop Surrealism; practitioners call it Lowbrow. With dozens of artist and gallery curator interviews, along with hundreds of examples, this program chronicles Lowbrow’s evolution, its iconoclasm and often antagonistic relation to Abstract Expressionism, as well as the rise of female artists to its forefront.

An Acquiring Mind:Philippe de Montebello and The Metropolitan: In this video they discussed Philippe de Montebello who was the director of The Metropolitan for 31 years and it also talked about the museum.

Tate Modern: They discuss the tate modern by Wolff Olins in 2000, and how successful it has come in the last 10 years on its anniversary.

2. Do the videos relate to the creation of your Art Exhibition project? If yes, explain how. If no, explain why not.
The lowdown on lowbrow is one video that I liked a lot and used a lot toward my Art Exhibition project. It was something that interested me because it was It was something I could relate to and something that really caught my eye
3. What is your opinion of the films? Do they add depth to understanding of the art concepts you practiced while creating your curation project?
I think that the videos definitely helped me to create my project, it gave me some good ideas and I got to learn about different art at the same time.

Module 12 Video Review

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.
Abstract Expressionism and Pop: Art of the ’50s and ’60s: I enjoy older generations and time periods so I figured this would be a good choice to see art in the 50s and 60s both great times. The Art of Henry Moore: I enjoy the videos that are about specific artists, then you can learn about that specific artist.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
Abstract Expressionism and Pop: Art of the ’50s and ’60s: talks about certain arts in these times periods and the different pieces of art they worked on this time period
The Art of Henry Moore: This program facilitates a rediscovery of the brilliant sculptor and draftsman by freshly examining many of his drawings, graphics, and monuments

3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
Abstract Expressionism and Pop: Art of the ’50s and ’60s:  In the text they discuss the different time periods but this gives you specific examples.
The Art of Henry Moore: I don't believe in the reading they discuss Henry Moore to the depth that the video does about him.

4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
Like I had already said they give you more depth to the topics being discussed such has in the 50s and 60s video it talks about specific arts in those time periods. This concept is the same in the Henry Moore video as well discussing a specific artist.

Art Visit #2

Questions about the exhibit:

1. What is the title of the exhibit?Burchfield Penney Art Center

2. What is the theme of the exhibition? The theme of the exhibition was it was all about the area of Buffalo and I would say more historical.Questions about the physical space:

1. What type of lighting is used?Throughout the gallery the lighting changed a bit in each area, it was mostly a darker lighting throughout besides one area where it was natural sun light which I thought was amazing for the pieces of art that were in the area.

2. What colors are used on the walls? The walls were white throughout the gallery.

3. What materials are used in the interior artchitecture of the space?I believe the materials were pretty basic for the space, they didn't have anything crazy in the space besides the unique artwork

4. How is the movement of the viewer through the gallery space? The movement throughout the area was easy and had a good flow, the more unique pieces were in one spot and then the water color was in a different part of the gallery.

Questions about the artwork:

1. How are the artworks organized? They are organized in a very nice way, they have a bunch of pieces of Buffalo right when you walk in and then throughout they have water colors and and they also have a lot of very unique sculptures

2. How are the artrworks similar? They all relate to buffalo in a different way

3. How are the artworks different? They may all be related to Buffalo in a way but they are all unquie and have a different message.

4. How are the artworks framed? Some of them are framed and some are not, some of just on the wall and then other pieces are in glass boxes, and some are just free standing.

5. How are the artworks identified and labeled? They have labels near them but some of them had them in a way that you may not know what piece they belong to.

6. What is the proximity of the artwork to each other? They are all spread out very well, none of them were on top of the other.

"Through these Gates John E Brent"
This piece of work is what you see when you first see when you work into the gallery, it has such a warm inviting feeling when you first see it. I am unsure who created this piece since I can not find it on the site and I didn't see a label for it near the piece. Who ever created this piece clearly had a vision of trying to invite people into there world. Space would be an element that was used to create this piece since it is a larger piece of art.

Helen Bishop-Santelli , Finding Self, 2013; cast glass, 8 x 12 x 17 inches; Courtesy of the Artist
This piece of art work really caught my eye, I believe the name of the piece was a huge part, "Finding Self" that made me look at the art work in a different way. Shape would be an element that was used with the shape of the person along with the objects that are around the person and even the object they are sitting on.

John Edmonston Brent (1889-1962), Michigan Avenue Branch Y.M.C.A., Buffalo, N.Y., 11-1-1926; graphite and transparent watercolor wash on paper, 12 7/8 x 22 /16 inches; Lent by Descendants of John E. Brent
This piece of art is a unique piece and its an old piece,  I like that they used very little color in this drawing. It gives the image an older look which I think that's how it should be since its from the 1900's. Images like this isn't something you can find anywhere else since its a building in Buffalo, NY.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
Matisse and Picasso: Compiling a half-century of unparalleled artistic dialogue, this program documents the complicated relationship between two indomitable personae: Matisse, the serene, self-indulgent father figure, and Picasso, the eternal adolescent and fiery primitive
The Mystical North: Spanish Art from the 19th Century to the Present: This program studies the artistic and social turmoil that engulfed Spain as the 20th century loomed, dawned, and rolled forward. Recounting Franco’s tyranny against free expression, the program looks at Spanish artists who continued to create provocative work.
2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
The videos are more about a specific place such as the spanish art video it goes to a specific part of spain and talks about the art work there and why it was created and the meaning about it. The other video compares the two artists and how they are different.
3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
I always prefer the videos because they make you look at the topics at hand in a different way and I think give you more information.

Module 10 Video Review

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.
African Art, I have always enjoyed African Art it always very different and has such a different meaning behind it as to why they created it.
African Art: Legacy of Oppression, this one was more looking at art in a museum and discusses why they were created and why masks were so important in African in later times.

Hand drawing fail

1. What was it like using your hand as subject matter for a drawing?
It was definitely an interesting thing to draw, the last time I drew my hand was a long time ago and I think I just traced it not actually drew it.
2. What media did you select - pencil or charcoal? Why?
I used pencil because I felt it would be easier to draw with.
3. How did it feel to create a drawing with your non-dominant hand?
As you can see in the picture, my non dominant hand drawing was terrible from my dominant hand.
4. Compare and contrast your final drawings. Do you think they are successful studies?
I am terrible at drawing, I think they are successful in demonstrating how hard it can be to draw your hand in a different way,
5. Would you consider using your non-dominant hand to create artwork in the future?
I would never use my non dominant hand to create artwork, they would never look good.

Module 8 video review

1. Explain why you selected the video you choose from the selection listed above.
I enjoy the greek art and the fact that it was talking about human art in this time period was interesting to me
2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
The more than human video talks about how the pieces of art that are created aren't realistic to the human body..its more of an imaginary world of human bodies.
In the Greek Art and Human Figures they talk about the cultural transformations that began in the 5th century BC as Greek art discarded religious functions and moved toward human-centered concerns
3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
Both of these videos relate back to the as they are talking about human figures and how the art work of the human body has evolved and is still a bit of a disillusion in the world now.
4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
The more than human video was very interesting to me, the way that they talked about how the images we see now a days are not realistic to what humans actually look like.
The Greek art and Human figures is very more in depth about how the human figures were being more developed and how it changed throughout the years and generations.
The second video I liked how they talked about the sculptures about women who were pregnant or how they made sculptures of women who had already given birth that was very interesting to me

Module Nine Video Review

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.
I have always liked Leonardo De Vinci and his art work.
The video the drawings of Michelangelo I have also enjoyed his art work is definitely different than most artists and in this video it talks about how is art work was never looked at and in this video it shows his actually works.
2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
In the video about Leonardo De Vinci it talks about his whole life from birth to death, where he was born and where he ended in his career.
Michelangelo's pieces of art are being shown in a different way than they have ever been seen before, his original drawings were very detailed and most of his works were never seen because he would ruin them before anyone could see them because he was unsure of his work.
2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
I believe the video about Leonardo goes into more depth of about his life from the beginning to the end.
In the video of Michelangelo they talk more about his pieces and why not many people saw his works, because he was never fully pleased with his work.
3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
I always like the videos better than the reading due to the fact that they discuss more things and usually go into more detail about the things discussed, such as the Leonardo De Vinci video I like that it goes into such detail about where he from and his art work. The Michelangelo video discusses more things about the pieces of works he created and then destroyed them before anyone could see them and judge them.

Video Review M7

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
Architecture: The Science of Design; this video talks about the design of large buildings in bigger towns, this program focuses on the scientific component.
Frank Gehry: Architecture of art: this program captures the essence of Frank Gehry and his iconoclastic creations through the celebrated architect’s own words; the insights of Cesar Pelli, Richard Serra, Hiro Yamagata, and Rafael Moneo; and a broad sampling of Gehry’s many structures.
2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
Both of these videos relate to the reading in a way that in the reading they discuss architecture but in the videos they just talk about it in a more detailed way and give better examples.
3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of Architecture?
I think both the videos were very informative in a way that they explain things in a different way. They use good examples such as the way they talk about the skyscrapers and the big building in big cities. I really liked the video about Frank Gehry, the architecture because it have more insight on how he works and the things hes done.
4. Why did you choose the films that you watched?
I watched the beginning of all the videos and the two that I picked were the most interesting to me and talked about a lot of things that were in the textbook that were very unique things to learn.

Video Review

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
Glass and Ceramic video, the key concepts are how the glass is made along with how ceramic is created. Through the eyes of a Sculptor it is discussing an individual who is sculptor different pieces along with how challenging it can be.
2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
The videos talk about similar things from the reading, such as how the glass and ceramic is made along with how difficult being a sculptor can be and how there job exactly works.
3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the topics: Sculpture, Installation, and Craft?
I think the videos are amazing, since it shows you the glass is made in the one video which i think is the coolest thing and would love to learn about that. I also enjoy sculptures I think the small details are so amazing and interesting. I think that anyone who is a sculptor has amazing talent and pays very good attention to detail.

2. When looking at Project #1: (Elements and Principles), did you agree with the element or principle the artist listed with the images? Did you see other elements and principles in the images?
Looking at both peer blogs they had amazing pictures and the elements or principles they picked were all correct. I had an issue with seeing the elements they choice but after looking at the pictures I saw them.
3. When looking at Project #2: Where there any images in the Peer Blogs the same as your own? If yes, what were they? Where the reasons the image was selected the same or different as your own?
In both peer blogs, neither had the same pictures as me. Which I really enjoyed because in one of the blogs she used a bunch of sculptures that were amazing and wish I had seen when I went to the art gallery.
4. Where there any images that your Peers selected that pique your interest now? If yes, what are they and what is your connection with them? What would you want to know about them?
Like I had said in the previous question, in one of the blogs I had reviewed she had taken pictures of a lot of sculptures and they had so much character and were amazing, Id love to know  how the artist came up with those ideas and concepts.
5. What do you think about  the process of reading your peers reflection? Do you find this to be a valuable in your learning?
Yes I think this is very valuable in learning, especially in an online class. This gives us a chance to interact with each other and then you can view other peoples works on the projects we have been working on.
6. Check your Blog and read comments posted by your Peers. Do you find their comments helpful?
I did not receive any comments on my posts

Church at Old Lyme has always been a favorite of mine.
B.) Which artworks do I feel a connection with? Why?
L'Ambitieuse and Music and Literature, I feel I made a connection with these two in a small ways, that in L'Ambitieuse its a female looking away from the people around here which I feel women do at times to escape life they remove themselves from situations. Self Logo

1. Discuss what you thought about creating your logo.
When I was thinking of things that represented myself, a million things came to mind; things I do everyday, things I love, I could go on and on but really there is only a very view things that make represent me and really complete me as a whole my family and my animals. Those are two very important things to me.
2. Describe the process: creative thinking skills and ideas you used in the logo creation.
I've always loved drawing bubble letters, I used to draw them in high school on everything. So I knew I wanted to use those in my logo in someway. Which I love bubble letters too! The dog print that I used I really just wanted to use a basic representation of a dog and that was simple enough for me.
3. What was the most important discovery you made in the creation of your logo?
I learned that im not a terrible drawer, and I actually enjoyed it a lot it didn't take me very long but I liked do it alot.
4. What is the most important information you learned from watching the videos, powerpoint, and reading material  for this project? What is your opinion of the videos?
I enjoyed reading the PDF documents probably because it had so many examples of different fonts that could be used, which I love fonts and changing them. The videos were interesting that they show how they go through the process of creating logos for different companies and that they create a bunch of options for the client.

Making Art!

1. Discuss what you thought about creating the Value Scale and Color Wheel.
I thought that creating them was very cool, Ive created one before but not with paint. I also think if I had used a better paint it would have turned out much better on the paper.
2. Which media did you enjoy working with the best and why?
I really enjoyed the color wheel youtube video, I liked how it showed you the different colors for primary and then how it was created and mixed onto the paper
3. What was the most important discovery in the creation of these studies?
With the Value Scale, that was interesting and a bit of a challenge since it decreases in a light way.
4. What is the most important information you learned from watching the videos for this project? What is your opinion of the videos?
I enjoyed both of the videos and thought they were very informative on how to create both a Value Scale and Color wheel, I really enjoyed the color wheel the best and thought it was good to see how it was created and it also gave good details on the colors used.

Slideshow of elements

http://s1168.photobucket.com/user/knpappa3253/library/Living%20with%20Art

<iframe width="480" height="360" src="http://s1168.photobucket.com/user/knpappa3253/embed/slideshow/Living%20with%20Art"></iframe>

For each of these photos, I feel like I took a different approach. I really enjoy taking pictures of the outdoors and using different angels for pictures, it brings about a cool effect to the pictures and helps people to see them at a different way. I also like to use different effects on pictures, so that people can look at them in a different light then what they are actually taken as. I really enjoyed taking these pictures, some are from around my house and others are from the outdoors by the water, which I love water and love taking pictures of the water and things around the water.

Color of Life

  1. Color is more than just a simply word, it can describe so much about life, an individuals life. People can look at a painting with so much color and completely look at in a different way than just a bunch of color on a piece of paper. Enlightenment helps people to better understand art and the color brought into a painting.
  2. I really like how people look at color a simple word which most people use to describe a painting, that can be so much more than that. Color is emotion to a piece of art, it means a lot to someone who is creating this piece of art. Its fascinating to me how they go into such detail, with the history of little things to make it more understandable as to why color is such a huge thing.
  3. In the color video, I really liked that June Redfern went back to where she has created some pieces and she really analyzes the colors of things and interrupts them in her own way. I enjoyed that a lot and I like the way she does he paintings. She really gets into her paintings and will get upset about things when they dont go right.
  4. In the feelings video, like I said before they go into detail about the history about enlightenment and other words that help to understand color and the emotions of it. I liked that a lot.

Understanding of works of art

1. For the YouTube video, the key concept is understand how the brain connects in some way to the creation of art. An individuals brain works in a way that helps people to come up with ideas for a painting. Each part of a persons brain is working in all different ways when they see a piece of art. In the CNN article is discuss similar things to the YouTube video, but it more talking about lines and faces, when we look around our surrounds we could see a wall, which has lines but if someone were to draw out the lines our brain would recognize both with or without the lines.
2.  I think that Plato makes great points to aesthetics, he looks at art in such a different way then I feel any other artist, he stated that artist copies an original idea, therefore when an artist has an idea and then expresses it via art, its a copy of the original copy. What I took from that, is that when you get an and then turn that into art its a copy of your own thoughts. I really like his way of thinking and think he does amazing work with his pieces of work.
3. I think that they both have very good views and points to their reasoning of how art pertains to science. Changuex believes thats genetics play a role in the evolutionary origins of art, he gave good detail as to how the human brain develops. Ramachandan is talking more about how art and science work together to evolve in the human brain. He made some good comments about how he looks at art and he almost picks it apart to show how amazing a piece of art can really be.
4. These videos and articles relate to the reading as they just go into more detail about aesthetics, along with the concept of how the brain relates to art and how the brain interrupts things.
5. I think that both the article and the videos help better to understand art not just from the artist point of view, but it helps me to see how the brain works to understand the art that is around us all the time.

Ice Breaker

  1. I have actually used blogger before, at the college I transferred from for one of my online classes. I think this is a really nice tool to use when doing any online class and its super easy to set up and use.
  2. I expect to learn new things about art that I may not know, or refresh my memory on things I have learned in the past. I have not taken an art class since high school.
  3. I love online classes, I took a full year of school online and enjoyed it very much. I hope I have the same experience this semester.
